Pre-Hispanic Stamp ca. 200-900 AD

A fine stamp made of a terra cotta colour/type clay. May have been used for fabric or paper. Jaguar head carved for the handle. A beautiful work of ancient art. This example measures 3" in width, 4" in length, and with the handle is 2 1/2" in depth. With a little help from the University of Western Ontario, we have determined the stamp may be from the Gulf Coast or Central Mexico. We think it is from either the state of Veracruz or the Valley of Oaxaca and dates to the Classic period ca. 200-900 AD. It could possibly be from the states of Puebla, Morelos, Tlaxcala or Guerrero. There is a 1974 book by Frederick Field, "Pre-Hispanic Stamp Designs" published in New York that may be able to place this stamp more precisely. We have not been able to locate a copy of this book. $1200 US.
