17th Century Signal Chamber Cannon
Known in Brritain as a chamber, a boite in France and a servadore in Spain.
Chambers were used as a signaling and/or saluting gun.
They required less powder than a normal cannon,
and because they fired at a vertical position, the noise was audible in all directions.
They were in vogue from the 16th Century through to the 19th.
This particular example from the continent (probably Italy or Spain) is of
heavy iron, octagon/squarish in cross section.
It has a stamped design of exploding fireworks.
The bore is .75 inch, overall height is 7 inches, about 7lbs in weight.
Overall a very fine example for the collector of cannon and/or firearm curiosa.
$750 US.
