Naval Cannon, a working replica
Many hours went into the building of this very fine working replica of a naval cannon. The cannon is a replica of what was called a Forecastle Signal Cannon. This type was used for signalling the beginning of a naval engagement to other ships in your fleet. It could then be loaded for action. The barrel is made of lathe turned steel, the wheels are iron, the carriage is of hard rock maple. The ignition system is percussion, lanyard operated. The bore is 1 3/4" which makes this gun a 1 pounder. I have fired this cannon, and she is impressive as well as beautiful. It has a 48" barrel, overall 55" in length and 18" in width. It is about 14 1/2" in height. A magnificent display piece for your den, or fully capable of shooting in the field.
