Very Fine Monkey/Crab Handled Sword Cane
When I purchased this cane, I was told the handle was pewter. I am not absolutely sure, but I think it is silver. Either way, it bears no maker's marks but the subject, and it's humorous treatment leads me to feel quite confident that the handle is of 1860-1870 Japanese origin. The handle being in the form of a monkey, having one glass eye and the other eye closed as he is wincing in pain. A crab may be seen behind the monkey with one claw pinching the monkey's tail. The expression on the monkey's face tells the tale! This handle is 3 5/8" long, the cane shaft appears to be seamless steel which ahs been copper plated to prevent rusting. A brownish black patina (typically Japanese) appears to have been added. The blade is hollow ground 3 sided and measures 10 inches in length. An iron cross hatched leather washered ferrel acts as a stop for the sword handle. Overall length of this gentleman's cane is 35 1/4". This is really a very beautiful cane in uncleaned excellent condition.
