West Coast Native Carved Wooden Mask ca. 1850-1875
An important mask in original condition. Carved from cedar with inlaid abalone shell teeth. It appears to be one of the healer "shaman" types and although direct provinence is unknown, it is probably attributable to the Bella Coola or one of the groups from the coast of southern British Columbia. The mask shows a good deal of wear and age staining. The face of the mask is painted in earthtone red, yellow ochre and brown. The back is unpainted and roughly carved. It also shows a good deal of wear and has been deeply stained from use. There is a thong hole for suspension centered in the upper forehead. It measures 10" in height and 7 1/2" in width. A truly magnificent piece for the serious collector of native artifacts.
