18th Century Eprouvette (Powder Tester)
A very interesting eprouvette, almost certainly 18th century.
The tester being flint, and having a powder tube running perpendicular to the action.
Upon firing, the discharge of the powder being tested, drives a lever weight on a ratchet,
which provides friction. An iron pointer points to a calibration on the housing covering the ratchet
and being numbered 1-14, one can determin the strength of the powder tested.
Moving the ratchet arm to one side allows the lever weight to be returned to 0.
Mechanism of lock has a full and half cock setting.
Overall, the piece retains 90% of it's original bluing, with minor pitting.
A most interesting eprouvette, but no maker's mark.
Mechanically sound and overall very fine condition.
Measures 9" in overall length, including the skeletonized brass handle.
$950 US
