Small Roman or Byzantine Oil Lamp
These little lamps made of fired clay are recovered on ancient Roman and Byzantine sites in Europe. Usually found broken, however many survive relatively undamaged. This example is undamaged and genuine. A nice item for the collector of early lighting. Thse lamps used oil and a wick and are around 2000 years old. The previous owner advises it was brought back from Europe as a souvenir by a WWII veteran. It measure 3 inches in length. The top has a design of indentations and the bottom has either the maker's mark in the form of a cross, or more likely a Christian Byzantine symbol.
