Federal Style Eagle Baton

The eagle became the national emblem of the USA in 1782. Interesting is the fact that although the Bald Eagle is the correct bird, on som USA coinage, the Golden Eagle is pictured. Long before America adopted the eagle as an emblem, the eagle was symbolic of power and strength, and was believed to be a messenger between man and God. In Christian symbolism, the eagle stands for divine power, the ascention of Christ. Because of the symbolism, the eagle has often been used as a symbol of position or authority.

Offered here is a baton which would have been in the possession of someone elected or appointed to a position of authority. Batons have been carried by everyone from Field Marshals to Clergy, to University Professors to Police Officers. This baton is 17 inches in length, constructed of black lacquered wood and having a silver finial which depicts an eagle, wings poised, head uplifted as if ready to take to flight. The detail is excellent. Although I have not had the eagle tested, I do believe it to be solid silver. The lack of hallmarks leads me to believe it to be American in manufacture rather than European. The eagle alone stands 2 1/2" in height and just about the same in width. I would place this artifact around 1840-1860. It would make a fine addition to the collector of Americana.
