Early Plains Indian Birch Bark Storage Basket
One of the largest baskets that I have seen! A very fine and early Birch bark cylindrical storage container, having the seams sewn with Spruce root rather than string or leather. The basket is decorated in typical Plains (Sioux) geometric designs using what would appear to be a natural root dye. The basket measures 16" in diameter and stands 12" in height. The lid fits snugly, but does have an age split. This could be restored by someone more knowledgeable than myself, but in my opionion looks good and original as is. A very rare artistic artifact of some considerable age. I am quite certain it dates prior to 1900 with the potential of being much older.
